As the cost of property increases in Central London, to choice between moving or improving forces people to be creative in the decisions they make with regards to their homes. North Architects were approached by the Owners of a one-bedroom basement flat in the heart of Stoke Newington to review the current living accommodation and advise on potential alterations and extensions that would allow the flat to become a two-bed property.

Key to the alterations was the purchase of an additional 25 square metres of garden from the freeholder who was also resident in the maisonette above. This additional space allowed the creation of an enclose courtyard enabling natural light to penetrate deep in to plan of the flat.

The formation of the lightwell also allowed the extension to be constructed with minimal disruption to the flat internally during the building process.
